We’re talkin’ baseball

The boys of summer are back and larger than life in this follow-up to 2007’s surprisingly exciting The Bigs.
Baseball videogames tend to be intricate and slow moving, but The Bigs was stripped down and souped-up — like a highlight reel. As well as featuring simpler controls, it focused on the dramatic and thrilling moments of a sport many consider dull: intense pitcher/batter duels, mighty swings and acrobatic fielding. Adding to the game’s over-the-top feel was the “turbo” feature — awesome plays on the field or at the plate earn turbo power, which you then deploy strategically to smash booming homeruns or bring the big heat from the mound.
In The Bigs 2, every play is still a big play, with exaggerated visuals of flame-trailing line drives, gravity-defying wall catches, and diving, somersaulting grabs. Plus, there’s a more in-depth career mode and a pick-up mode where you select from past and present pros, all set to a driving alt-rock soundtrack.
Also returning are the offbeat mini-games, and they’ve been seriously juiced during the off-season. These include batting at targets in the stands, swatting at a continuous stream of coloured balls, where some earn points and some deduct, and foot races through obstacle-strewn stadiums. Best of all is Homerun Pinball, where pitcher and batter stand in the middle of Times Square or the Las Vegas strip racking up points by slamming balls into taxis, neon billboards and crowds of onlookers.
Can’t wait for the Ken Burns documentary on this version of the national pastime.

Don’t laugh! It may be based on a Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer movie about secret-agent guinea pigs, but this creative action-platformer should challenge any gamer. Use your stealthy rodent skills plus a variety of high-tech weaponry (ray guns, an electric whip, jet pack) to defeat evil household appliances like toasters and vacuum cleaners.

Can’t get to the cottage? Set on an island resort, this collection offers a bunch of summery outdoor activities — water-scooter racing, tossing a frisbee to a dog — that will at least get you off the couch. It also includes Nintendo’s new MotionPlus accessory, which plugs into the Wii-mote to more accurately sense complex movements.
