THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON (pictured above)
Stars: Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett
Director: David Fincher (Fight Club)
Story: The beautifully told, albeit glacially paced, tale of Benjamin Button (Pitt) who is born a wrinkly monster, lives out his childhood as a bent-over senior, grows into a strong middle-aged man, then a youthful old man, before ending his life as a baby. Blanchett is Daisy, Button’s lover who must deal with his increasing vigor as she grows old.
LAST CHANCE HARVEY
Stars: Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson
Director: Joel Hopkins (Jump Tomorrow)
Story: Call it Before Sunrise for the nearly senior set. Hoffman plays Harvey, an American jingle writer in London for his daughter’s wedding, who gets the bad news that his little girl would rather have her stepfather walk her down the aisle. Drowning his sorrows at a pub he meets Kate (Thompson), who has been stood up. They bond, and spend the day walking around London, talking and getting to know one another.

WENDY AND LUCY
Stars: Michelle Williams, Will Patton
Director: Kelly Reichardt (Old Joy)
Story: On her way to Alaska to, perhaps, get a job at a cannery, Wendy (Williams) runs into trouble when her car breaks down and she becomes separated from her only friend in the world, her dog Lucy. This little-seen movie was chosen the best of the year by the Toronto Film Critics Association.

UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS
Stars: Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy
Director: Patrick Tatopoulos (debut)
Story: Respected British thespians Sheen (Frost/Nixon) and Nighy (Valkyrie) have a ball howling and snarling for the camera in this prequel to the other two Underworld movies. Sheen is young Lucian, leader of the werewolves, and Nighy is Viktor the Death Dealer (or vampire) in this film that traces the origins of the rival races’ blood feud.

PASSENGERS
Stars: Anne Hathaway, Patrick Wilson
Director: Rodrigo García (Nine Lives)
Story: After a crash that kills all but nine of an airplane’s 100 passengers, the survivors are sent to see psychologist Claire Summers (Hathaway) and deal with their trauma. But when, one by one, those survivors stop coming to Claire’s sessions she starts to suspect foul play.

MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D

Story: First things first. Yes, the DVD is in 3D. Well, actually, it comes with both 2D and 3D versions, so you can decide just how far you want the blood to splatter. Now, the plot. Tom (Ackles) finally returns home 10 years after being partially responsible for a mine cave-in that took five lives and subsequently created a serial killer (don’t ask). Everyone thought that killer was dead, but as soon as Tom returns, the murders begin again.

Story: The true story of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg
(Cruise), a high-ranking German officer who, during World War II, was
instrumental in a plot to kill Hitler. Unfortunately, we all know this
one’s not going to have a happy ending.

PAUL BLART: MALL COP
Stars: Kevin James, Raini Rodriguez
Director: Steve Carr (Are We Done Yet?)
Story: In the surprise hit of 2009, James plays Paul Blart, a
wannabe police officer who has to settle for a gig as a mall security
guard instead. On the one day the straight-laced Blart comes to work
hung over (the result of a mix-up with a pitcher of margaritas) a band
of crooks attacks the mall and Blart’s the only one who can stop them.

OUTLANDER

Director: Howard McCain (No Dessert, Dad, Till You Mow the Lawn)
Story: Caviezel plays a humanoid alien from another planet who crash lands on Earth during Viking times. To complicate matters, he brings along an unwelcome stowaway in the form of a monster called The Moorwen. Nova Scotia and Newfoundland provided the shooting locales for this leather-bound sci-fi/fantasy hybrid.

NEW IN TOWN
Stars: Renée Zellweger, Harry Connick Jr.
Director: Jonas Elmer (Nynne)
Story: Director Jonas Elmer’s last feature, Nynne, has been called the Danish Bridget Jones, so it’s no surprise that he connected with this project starring our Bridg (Zellweger) as a big-city consultant who is transferred to small-town Minnesota to put its local food plant out of business. Will she do it, or will she fall in love with the plant’s union rep (Connick) instead?
