Taking the road less travelled
By Scott Gardner
FUEL
PC, PS3, Xbox 360
For the daredevil drivers of FUEL, there’s no crying over spilt milk. Or more correctly: the melted polar ice caps that have caused sea levels to rise, and thrown the world’s climate out of whack, leaving much of North America an inhospitable wasteland.
In a near-future ravaged by the effects of environmental abuse, most sensible folk have fled for greener pastures, but a few thrill-seekers have remained behind, pitting their grungy, home-tuned vehicles against each other to win fuel supplies in a new extreme sport.
Unlike simulation games that strive to convincingly replicate the handling of a real car, FUEL is an arcade-style racer, offering over-the-top action and thrills. So what’s the twist? For once there are literally no boundaries — if you see something, you can drive to it. The game models an astonishing 14,000 square kilometres of diverse terrain and instead of racetracks with start and finish lines, you carve your own route across vast landscapes.
Even better, the new-and-improved climate mixes things up with unpredictable extreme weather like blizzards, lightning strikes, sandstorms and tornados. Not only does this affect your vehicle’s performance in the moment, every time you race through an area, its conditions will be different.
Rides include motorcycles and muscle cars for blazing across deserted blacktop, SUVs to tackle the tsunami-wrecked Pacific coast and abandoned lakeside resorts, dirt bikes to scramble down mountainsides and dune buggies to traverse the arid wastelands skirting the Grand Canyon. Who knew global warming could be so much fun?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
DS, PC, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, Xbox 360
Like its big-screen inspiration, this third-person brawler unsheathes the cantankerous Wolverine’s wicked adamantium claws for bone-crunching action. To unravel his tragic past, you’ll need all of the lovable anti-hero’s mutant powers: feral instincts and bloody rage; brutal strength; regenerative ability and, most importantly, his badass quips.

Punch-Out!!
Wii
After a 20-year absence, scrappy boxer Little Mac — hero of the beloved Punch-Out!! for the NES console — returns to pummel both challengers and new fighters. Naturally the game will use Wii-mote and nunchuk controllers to simulate throwing punches, but nostalgic (or lazy) gamers can switch to the classic button-mashing play of the original.
