Ben Harper thinks he sounds like Dr. Phil. Plus, Diana Krall at Cineplex

Ben Harper Rocks
Ben Harper has carved out a stellar career playing bluesy-rock, folksy-rock, reggae-rock — a lot of hyphenated rock — over his 12 albums.
But suddenly, the universe told Ben Harper he needed to just rock.
“There’s nothing forced or cookie cutter about it, it’s just where the music demanded I be in the moment,” Harper says of his conversion to all-out rocker while in Toronto promoting his new album.
The evidence of his sea change can be found on that album, White Lies For Dark Times (out May 5th), recorded with his new band, Relentless 7, which he calls, “A collective of four men playing very loud, and hard, and who sweat.”
Harper met guitarist Jason Mozersky in the late ’90s when Mozersky, who worked as a driver for a Texas music promoter, was shuttling Harper to a gig and bravely asked to play the star his demo tape. Harper said sure, loved it, and they became friends. The pair eventually hooked up with drummer Jordan Richardson and bassist Jesse Ingalls to form Relentless 7.
Even Harper thinks it’s pretty cool that he altered the course of his career because he let a dude driving a van play him a demo. “It’s so refreshing when you remember life can happen to us as much we have to make life happen for us. I sound a little bit like f---ing Dr. Phil here, but it’s true. Growth is one of the best things in life, and this album represents such a vast creative expansion for me personally. It wasn’t to be denied and it wasn’t contrived.”

Singers On Screen
R&B singer Christina Milian gets plenty of face time in May as she releases her fourth CD, Elope, and also pops up as one of Matthew McConaughey’s female conquests in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.
Krall Rocks Rio
