Summer Movie Preview: July
Our picks for July’s must-see movies
JULY 1
PUBLIC ENEMIES (pictured above)
Tired of based-on-a-true-story films that turn out to be about as true as Bernie Madoff’s investments? Well, here’s something you should know about Public Enemies. That scene where bank robber John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) has his famous shootout with FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) was filmed at Wisconsin’s Little Bohemia Lodge, the actual site of the 1934 event.
They also used the real Lake County jail in Crown Point, Indiana. Dillinger escaped from that jail using a gun carved from a block of wood. And Marion Cotillard, who plays Dillinger’s lover Billie Frechette, was even spotted at the Wisconsin reservation where Frechette grew up, digging around for inspiration.
Bryan Burrough, the Vanity Fair writer on whose book the movie is based, credits director Michael Mann, who has a reputation for being accurate in his reality-based films (The Last of the Mohicans, Ali, The Insider), for the attention to detail. After reading the script, Burrough happily wrote on his blog, “No, it’s not 100 percent historically accurate. But it’s by far the closest thing to fact Hollywood has attempted, and for that I am both excited and quietly relieved.”
What a lovely change.
ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS
You may have already guessed, but dinosaurs are the big obstacles for Sid the sloth, Manny the mammoth and Diego the sabre-toothed tiger this time around. And it’s all Sid’s fault. When he tries to steal some dino eggs, Sid becomes trapped in a hidden world where the big beasts still rule. It’s up to his buds — including expectant papa Manny — to get him out.

BRÜNO
Is guerrilla filmmaking as successful the second time around? Reports of Sacha Baron Cohen
jumping up on catwalks and attending pro-Prop 8 rallies as Brüno, the
over-the-top and out-of-the-closet Austrian TV personality (who, like
Borat, became popular on Da Ali G Show) popped up fairly regularly over the past year. But it remains to be seen whether — in a post-Borat world — the comedian was able to get the kind of damning, off-the-cuff responses needed to make a hit-and-run comedy work.

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE
Oh, the anguish. The disappointment. The tears. Harry Potter
fans were out of their minds with anticipation prior to last fall’s
release of the sixth Potter film. But then Warner Bros. waved their
magic wand and made the November 21st release date disappear. At last
Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) returns to search for Voldemort’s horcruxes, which contain pieces of his evil soul.

G-FORCE
We realize that a live action/CGI pic about an elite squad of highly skilled guinea pigs running secret missions for the U.S. government sounds absolutely ridiculous. But that’s what we thought about Alvin and the Chipmunks too.

THE UGLY TRUTH
A TV producer (Katherine Heigl) turns to her chauvinistic reporter (Gerard Butler) for honest advice about landing a guy. So what are the chances she’ll fall for him in the end? We see shades of He’s Just Not That Into You, right down to the casting of Kevin Connolly as one of Heigl’s failed dates.

FUNNY PEOPLE
Ever since Pagliacci introduced us to the sad clown it’s been hard
to look at comedians without a bit of pity. Get ready for a whole pity
party as famous comedian George Simmons (Adam Sandler) is diagnosed with a blood disorder that may kill him. Friendless, he bonds with young stand-up Ira Wright (Seth Rogen) who helps him through his worst times, including the realization he still loves his ex (Leslie Mann, wife of the film’s director Judd Apatow) even though she’s now married.
